Study Area

All small water bodies in Kisoro and Kabale districts (Figure 1) will be studied for baseline environmental, fish stocks and socio-economics status. These include: (Mutanda, Mulehe, Chahafi and Kayumbu) in Kisoro and Lake Bunyonyi in Kabale. Baseline data will guide selection of lakes for different fish production models e.g. restocking, aquaculture and management. Rehabilitation of the fisheries may demand restoration of the watershed, pollution control, and inflow management and therefore integrative watershed restoration will be evaluated through empirical surveys and engagement of local communities in basic environmental monitoring. Our management interventions will focus on fisheries manipulations in selected lakes (via restocking, culture models, and management/harvest regimes). Watershed issues will be assessed through partnerships with studies that focus on links between land conversion and water quality.
