Academic qualifications Margaret Aanyu holds a Bachelor of Science degree in zoology and Botany obtained from Makerere University in Uganda (1994-1997), a Master of Science degree in aquaculture from University of Ghent in Belgium (2002-2004) and a PhD in Aquaculture Nutrition (phytogenic compounds as growth promoters in the diets of Nile tilapia) undertaken at the University of Stirling in United Kingdom (2013-2016). She is a Senior Research Officer, employed by the National Agricultural Research organisation (NARO) in Uganda from 2006-todate and her duty station is the Aquaculture Research and Development Center. Her research focus is on developing cost-effective nutritionally balanced and growth-promoting fish diets and feeding strategies for farmed fish. She has been a Principle Investigator/Co-Investigator of various projects amongst which are: a)Project on development of aquaculture benchmarks for Eastern and Western Uganda (2007-2009) funded by the World bank. The aim was to identify and address region-specific challenges affecting aquaculture productivity and profitability and address them. b)Project Investigatingphytogenics (natural growth promoters)with potential for use as growth promoters in the diet for Nile tilapia, funded by Schlumberger Foundation and Government of Uganda c)Project on development of nutritionally balanced diets for Nile tilapia using low-cost ingredients for sustainable rural aquaculture development and Enhancement of aquaculture productivity, profitability and marketing for improved nutrition and income in Uganda funded by the Swiss Agency for Development Cooperation. d) Project on commercialisation of Nile perch fish oil e)Project on development of cost effective unextruded floating insect-based fish feed for Nile tilapia funded by government of Uganda and f) Presently coordinating an EU funded study on improving the quality, cost-effectiveness and management of formulated feeds based on locally produced improved crop varieties and non-conventional animal protein sources. Margaret Aanyu is a result-oriented person and is passionate about disseminating the results of the research work she undertakes to the target end-users. She does this through various approaches including: radio talk shows, agricultural shows/demonstrations and exhibitions, fact sheets, brochures, conference presentations and publications in reviewed journals. Before joining NARO, Margaret worked as a Senior Fisheries Officer (District Fisheries Officer) inKatakwi District Local Government, Uganda. Involved in designing action plans for conservation, enhancementand sustainable exploitation of the fisheries. During which, she competently coordinated projects jointly implemented with the following development partner organizations like Self Help Development International (SHDI),Department for International Development (DFID) small-scale fish farming project, World Food Programme (WFP).
